Theming

Hello, everyone,

I play seriously with the idea to install Q4OS and use it professionally as my primary OS (currently I use Debian+Openbox, unfortunately still on Jessie). I have watched some reviews on YouTube and I am impressed by the speed and of course the stability. In the reviews I noticed that version 3.1 has a really good theme, very well configured. Is there a possibility to use the 3.1-Theming in the current stable version of Q4OS?

Cheers!
rothom

Re: Theming

The theme in use on the Testing version is called Debonaire and can be installed using look-switcher and clicking "Show All Themes". I would use the stable version (Scorpion) for any machine you rely on, as the testing version (Cantaurus) is quite new and although might be 90% reliable at could any time act irrational.

And welcome to the forum smile

Re: Theming

There are actually many theme choices once you enable Lookswitcher as Im presently using KDE classic that mimics the older KDE 3.5.

Re: Theming

@Dai_trying

First of all, thank you for welcoming me.

Thanks for your explanation, and I have to admit it: Since I'm not so familiar with the KDE/Trinity configuration, I wanted to go the easy way and take over the theme of 3.1. Both the configuration of the taskbar and the iconset/theme.

How can the 3.1 theme act irrationally? Do you have experience?

Re: Theming

@crosscourt

KDE 3.5 looks really old-fashioned now, I want to have a modern look. Maybe my opinion will change again at some point, but right now the KDE 3.5 look isn't really my thing. But thanks for your answer and also the note with the Lookswitcher.

Re: Theming

Not sure i understand but when you install Scorpion 2.4 youll see Lookswitcher under appearance and themes, just click on it and go to the interface and click all themes, pick Debonaire, then log out and back in and it should look fine.

Re: Theming

I really wasnt recommending you use KDE classic 3.5 rothom, was just using it as an example of one of many theme choices available for Q4OS.  Debonaire suits more users because of its look, features and design.
I like KDE classic because Im a bit nostalgic over the older KDE 3.5.

Enjoy!

Re: Theming

@crosscourt:

Dai had already given the tip and said that the theme can behave irrationally, because it is still very new. Since I have not yet installed Q4OS, but only plan to install it, I just wanted to inform myself in advance about the possibilities of changing the theme in Q4OS.

@Jack:

No, thank you. I want a lightweight OS.

Re: Theming

@crosscourt:

I've already understood you, didn't see it as a recommendation, don't panic. I just wanted to give my two cents to it ;-)

Re: Theming

The theme isnt what Dai was discussing I believe, he was encouraging you to use Scorpion 2.4 not the newer 3.1 testing OS for your pc as its the stable version versus the 3.1 alpha. Debonaire is a known quantity, versus the underpinnings of the new testing OS.

Regardless good luck with your install.

As to KDE 5 its not really a heavy DE as I use other distros where the resource usage is around 407mbs, thats only 100mb off XFCE and 130mb off Q4OS. If you turn off unwanted startup apps it can be quite a good performer.

Re: Theming

Then I misunderstood Dai. My fault. I am only interested in the following: rock solid stable and fast. And I think that Q4OS in the stable version (Scorpion) has and fulfils exactly these characteristics. My computer is now 8 years old, but it works perfectly, so I want to use an OS which only needs a few resources. As I said: At the moment I am still using Debian+Openbox, but I want to give Q4OS a chance. And so far DE like KDE or Gnome have never really irritated me. And the traditional KDE desktop (I last used it on sidux) appeals to me, it's not overloaded.

Re: Theming

TDE is essentially a modern KDE 3.5(thats what attracted me to it initially) and for an 8 year old computer its a great choice for speed and resource usage. If youre using Debian youll be right at home with Q4OS being based on Debian 9. Dai also runs Debian on the side as many do here onsite.

Re: Theming

Debian is always first choice for me. I don't need the latest software and 50 megs daily when I do a dist-upgrade. Replacing the system every 2-3 years is enough for me.

I will definitely give a feedback as soon as I have it installed.

Re: Theming

Sorry. I'm a bit late to the party here, but I meant that 3.1 (Centaurus) which is based on Debian Testing could be occasionally irrational, this is purely because it is used to test newer packages and changes quite a lot. It is generally a pretty stable version to use but it can sometimes give you an unexpected surprise when a new version of something messes up.
