installation of second OS

I have Q4OS installed as my primary OS in sda2 with Grub.
I want to install a secondary (and maybe a) third OS.
I usually did install in the second partition, choose Grub and the boot device in the partition I installed the OS.
I then linked the second to : menu.lst in the first partition /boot/grub/menu.lst

Now, with Q4OS I don't see menu.lst.

How do you do this in Q4OS

link / url to < somewhere > is OK

(( note: I looked in the repos and found grub-choose-default, but got a (red) message to fix broken package first ))

Thanks for reading

Re: installation of second OS

If you are using a legacy system (MBR boot) then you should be able to simply install grub and decide which OS you want to control boot up, and then once all systems are installed simply run sudo update-grub on the controlling OS and it will search and find all available OS's for you. I have used this method and at one point I had 8 OS's all on one Hdd controlled by my main OS (Q4OS smile )
If you accidentally give control to a different OS and want to restore it, simply boot into whichever OS you want to be in charge and run sudo grub-install /dev/sda (you can [and should] replace sda with the correct hdd/partition for your system)
One thing to remember though, you will need to make sure os-prober package is installed on the grub controlling system, this is used to search for the other OS's.

Re: installation of second OS

Hi Dai_trying

I followed your instructions, but got not the desired result.
Whilst doing that, I asked myself if it would not be better to stick to what I have now, and tackle more important tasks, such as a second monitor, virtualbox, proper backup, some of your scripts, etc etc.
So, please pardon me for wasting time, but that second OS is now my very very last priority.

Thanks for the assistance. We will meet again, soon :-)

Re: installation of second OS

Probably a good decision to stick to the primary OS and  configuring it overall.  Depending on the size of your hard drive and the type of system your using, desktop vs laptop, you might consider installing a second OS on another drive to avoid issues.

Re: installation of second OS

The above mentioned problem has gone away by wiping my hard disk , repartition and doing every installation in Grub2 .I left legacy grub behind as 'most' distros will not support it any longer anyway!

Re: installation of second OS

Sounds like the best choice, I'm sure Q4OS uses Grub2 so it would have been my first choice. smile Out of curiosity what is your Primary OS?

EDIT: looks like I asked a stupid question roll re-read the OP and gave myself a headslap!
