Q4OS and 32-bit GPU drivers on 64-bit systems (Wine, Steam, etc.)

AFAIK, you need a 32-bit i386 GPU driver on 64-bit systems to get hardware acceleration working, e.g. in Wine.

I've noticed that the Q4OS tool for installing proprietary NVIDIA drivers does not ask if we would like to install a 32-bit version of the driver. When installing NVIDIA drivers from the official NVIDIA website you always see this question. Maybe the Q4OS tool should ask about this as well?

How does the situation with 32-bit drivers on a 64-bit OS look for other manufactures, i.e. AMD and Intel? Are they just installed together with a 32-bit app, e.g Wine or Steam? And what about open-source drivers?

Should Debian multiarch be enabled all the time (or just for installing a few 32-bit packages and then disabled)?

Looking for problems with 32-bit apps on 64-bit systems, I've also learned that quite a few people are having issues with wrong symbolic links. I think this is also something worth keeping in mind...

PS
I'm still on my quest to run Chessmaster 10th Edition on my uncle's computer (GeForce 6150) with Wine. So far with Q4OS 1.8.3 64-bit and libgl1-nvidia-legacy-304xx-glx:i386 installed I can only see graphical glitches. Of course, other apps in Wine with hardware acceleration have problems too, e.g. Quake 2 in software mode works fine, but as soon as I switch to the OpenGL renderer it crashes. My quest continues...

Re: Q4OS and 32-bit GPU drivers on 64-bit systems (Wine, Steam, etc.)

Earlier today I checked debian's multiarch solutions because I am also in the process of switching to 64 bit operating systems. I have about three 32bit applications that I really need, but I do not wish to sacrifice system performance or stability. None of the multiarch solutions are to my liking so I decided to install Q4OS i386 as a virtual machine in VirtualBox on Q4OS amd64. Both systems run in their native architecture and it all works perfectly. No library or link problems at all. Perhaps this is a solution that works for you as well.

A virtual machine seems like even more hassle. tongue I think I would consider going back to the 32-bit system first...

It would be really nice if the Q4OS Team commented on my 32-bit GPU driver questions. smile

Q4OS nvidia installer doesn't use multiarch at all. It simply checks the system for nvidia cards using 'nvidia-detect' utility. If detected, it determines one of the following packages to install:
'nvidia-legacy-304xx-driver'
'nvidia-driver'
'nvidia-driver/jessie-backports'

If you need a control over the installation, we recommend you to perform manual setup by official Debian wiki https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers
