I noticed when installing a package that I have 225 packages which can be removed (using autoremove) and thought it was a bit odd, and when tracing the problem it appears binutils has an update available but is not being upgraded with the system. I do recall some time back there was a fix for another issue (similar to this) that involved a custom binutils having to be installed and wondered if there is a connection to that which is preventing the upgrade of binutils. I noticed that the binutils that is installed (2.27.90.20170124-2) does not show a url, only the /var/lib/dpkg/status entry.
Can I safely force an upgrade to the newer version?

Yes, 'binutils' package is intentionally held by 'libr0' dependencies at the moment.

No, do not force upgrade, as libr0 is incompatible with 'binutils' 2-28. Just wait untill new version of libr0 will be available in Scorpion repositories, the upgrade proceed automatically.

Ok, thanks guys.

Fixed, just do update && upgrade of your system.

Thanks, updated and upgraded. I did have to reinstall some packages that appear to have been removed even though the entries were still in the start menus... I've gone through and I think I've got everything back again.

I did an „apt-get update“ and waited till I saw your message. Then I did an „apt-get upgrade“, 243 files were downloaded (no mention of libr0 and binutils) and it went smooth.
Thanks a lot for your quick solutions!

That's not surprising with a fresh Scorpion installation, being testing based it receives a lot of updates.

Well, did I complain about it? ;-)
I am accustomed to it from Debian since long.
Have a nice weekend,
