Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I ran a website where I tested hundreds of distros on a huge number of systems new and old so I just comment on the occurrence and frequency of issues with certain systems. Ive been down a lot of roads but everyones mileage will vary.
In my case it was just laptops and overall Ive had few issues.
Whats interesting is WattOS R10 runs with no issues or tweaks on those same laptops that cant run Scorpion.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

WattOS is Ubuntu so cannot really be used as a comparison... have any Debian (Stretch) based distro's worked where Scorpion hasn't?

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

It has nothing to do with Ubuntu vs Debian its about kernels. WattOS 4.4 kernel works, Scorpion 4.9 kernel doesnt work. Orion works because of the 3.16 kernel.

Linux Mint with 4.10 kernel doesnt work, Linux Lite with 4.4 kernel does work.

Also tested Sparky Linux, Antix and MXLinux all using the 4.9 kernel and based on Debian Stretch and they dont work either.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I guess I wont be able to offer any credible solutions until I come across a system that doesn't accept Scorpion, and if my past luck continues (which I hope it does smile ) it might be a while...
One thing I am thinking though is that it could be caused by graphics hardware as that does seem to be the root cause of many issues with the newer kernels

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

Yes, I would agree as there are many different configurations involving graphics which can cause issues. With the older systems though many times its motherboard revisions/bios issues and compatibility with integrated features. It also happens with much newer systems where you need to run recent kernels to get the proper support for your hardware.

Again given all the systems ive been running Ive had two laptop versions that couldnt run Scorpion so thats not what I would call a huge issue. Orion runs fine and there are other distros as always.

When it comes to compatibility with hardware you can definitely compare all available distros and I keep detailed stats on just that from testing.

Im glad though you havent had any issues as my recent set of hardware hasnt had any either. The Optiplex 7010 series,v130s and E5410 all love scorpion!

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

So,I thought I'd let all know the different distros I tried on this machine, that didn't work. Now , I haven't installed the 4 gig of RAM yet. I haven't  burned a new version of Orion 1.8.8 or Scorpion 2.4. I'm having issues with K3b on my other computer. Linux Lite wouldn't even load. Zorin core loaded, did all the updates, but locked up. Linux Cylon loaded, but would lock up. Pinguy and Topaz wouldn't load. Keep in mind, these are older versions of OS's I was burning a while back. Porteus loaded, and seemed to work. I did finally installed Ubuntu Studio Live 16.4 on it. My friend swears by 14.4 So,I'll try this for awhile. It seems totally "alien" to me compared to Trinity. CC,Dai, and a lot of others on here have way more experience than I with distros. I'm just giving you my input. I hope this was helpful.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I'll just throw this out there as something you can try, for older machine other than q4os anti-x is awesome.  It's also based on debian, but goes with xfce instead of trinity, and goes a little more in-depth with modifying it (removing systemd notably).  Designed specifically for older and lower-spec machines, it's something I'd recommend trying on uncooperative hardware.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

Antix didnt work on my Athlon 64 X2 systems nor on my D430s. Sparky Linux and MXLinux also had issues.

Doesnt surprise me that 14.04 based distros do work with CaptNoise system as they use much older kernels.
Problem with 14.04 is, its no longer supported so not a good long term solution.

Thanks for the input Capt

Actually 14.04 is supported for another 18 months.  14.04 is a LTS release.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

Thanks for spotting that tlmiller as I thought 14.04 was released early 2012, indeed it was released in April 2014,duh.  14.04.5 will be the final release with maintenance releases only till support stops.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

Your Welcome, CC
Perhaps I'm just spoiled, but I really don't like XFCE. Is it me...? Or do the rest of you feel that way...? Xfce just feels mundane. Not at all like Trinity. I also think that Q4OS just reacts quicker. I think it is a much better distro for a beginner in Linux, than any other. We'll see how it responds with 4 gig of Ram (Q4OS)

I'll take XFCE over Gnome3, but yeah, I agree in that I dislike XFCE.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I really like XFCE and use it all the time as well as Trinity,Mate,LXDE and KDE.  Hate Gnome 3 will not use it.  Even with my enjoyment of XFCE I still use and like KDE, particularly with Mageia 6.  Trinity gives me my taste of KDE 3 which I liked so much in the old days.

I believe Dai also uses XFCE with Debian.

Q4OS will respond very well with 4 gb of ram.

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I wanted to let all of you know one reason why I was having problems with the install with Q4OS on this machine. Even tho I was using an older version of Q4OS(1.4.6)  It still should have loaded and not locked the desk profiler. Then, I realized this 1.4.6 version was for 32 bit architecture... Not 64 bit....Ugh...! Too many hours at the post office for me.....! I'll have the newest version of Orion 1.8.8 64 bit in my hands tomorrow. By this weekend,I'll have the new RAM installed. I will also burn the newest version of Scorpion 2.4 64 bit,so I can try it. I will let you know how it all turns out.

Yes I usually use the Xfce desktop with Debian when not in Q4OS, as it is relatively light and easily configurable, it is my 2nd go-to desktop.

I've just put Scorpion on an old Acer Aspire with only 700MiB of RAM, and it works great! I've no problems with the Desktop Profiles, Synaptic, or *anything*

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

Which Acer Aspire model do you have, as it would be nice to know the hardware involved.

CaptNoise 32 bit OS will run just fine on 64bit systems but youll be limited with the amount of ram you can use, typically 4gb.

Theres something else going on with your system, memory could be the problem but 1gb with Orion should have worked

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I got the 4 gig of ram in and installed it. However, I've been so busy with work. I haven't even been able to turn it on...! My plan is to use Ubuntu Studio to burn the ISO's for Orion 1.8.8 and Scorpion 2.4. I will then try to run them and see which one works better. This is time consuming, and since I only have a day off,it may take me awhile,to let all of you know my findings. But,rest assured, I'll be sorting your mail, and getting it to you...LoL..!

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

OK...here's what I did... I downloaded Q4OS Scorpion 2.4 from the Ubuntu Studio I was running. After I checked it and made sure all was good,I installed Scorpion on my computer. It took roughly an hour, but no problems..! I used the desktop profiler, and opted for the full OS.
I then used synaptic to download what I needed...I opted to use Q4OS teams' command line code to install Firefox 57...WoW...! You guys are right..! It runs faster than Slimjet...!  I was pleasantly surprised to see K3b was part of the install. Thunderbird synced right up..! All is running well...! No problems..! I did download Slim jet amd_64.deb but doesn't start in an install mode. Perhaps, someone can tell me how to install it. Ark extracts the files, but no install file...or maybe I'm not seeing it...? How would you install it using the command line..?

Re: HP Pavilion a1710n

I haven't used slimjet, but can you simply navigate to the folder and type slimjet? if so you could create a desktop link to the same executable or even create a .desktop file (with menu options) to have it show in your menu.
I did notice the slimjet website offers a .deb package to make installation simple, could you try that?

EDIT: Sorry read you post properly after posting this... roll
you could simply install the deb file using apt/dpkg/gdebi and it should give you the menu entries.
