Re: Kingsoft Office For Default Installation

Can't speak for the developers, but Kingsoft office isn't open source, nor even free as in beer for the fully functional version.  Given that LibreOffice is completely open source and is just as functional (although yes, I prefer WPS gui to Libreoffice gui and it's faster by a fair amount), there'd be no good reason to have WPS installed by default.

Also, the .deb version of WPS has been broken in Stretch (stable) for quite some time.  Should still work if you have Orion installed (based on Jessie) as the dependencies still exist in those repositories if I remember correctly.  Until WPS fixes this (was reported WELL OVER a year ago), there's no good way to get WPS working on newer systems.

I agree, I doubt the devs will offer WPS.

There are better choices available as mentioned in the previous posts, we have no plan to provide Kingsoft installer for Q4OS. By the way, it could be a nice job for Kingsoft devs in the future, as Q4OS will become more popular.

Re: Kingsoft Office For Default Installation

WPS free isnt well supported in Windows either so Kingsoft needs to get their act together

Re: Kingsoft Office For Default Installation

On the flip side - I have a fairly simple tri-fold brochure with some graphics and a largish table that I have to maintain for our local U3A.

It has to be .docx format so that the Windows/Office folks can use it if needs be. So, I either dig out Office 2007/2010 under Wine/Crossover or stay native.

Softmaker Office is the only software that allows me to do this. Libreoffice in all versions just leaves a scrambled mess. I've been working with this since the days of StarOffice 6.0 on OS/2 and still find it to be clunky and just plain horrible when trying to create complex layouts for interchange with MS Office folks.

Mind you, MSWorks for DOS still runs fine under DOSBox smile

OK, Softmaker interface is not hugely pretty. Save to docx requires paid for version but it does actually work.

Kingsoft does have its advantages no doubt as I use it for similar projects to yours.

Re: Kingsoft Office For Default Installation

I used to use it, until they broke the Debian version wanting archaic dependencies.  I finally gave up on it ever working again about 6 months ago.

I switched to SoftMaker Office for most of my machines (I purchase a 6-seat licence for Linux every new version, will again with 2018 here in a few months), use LibreOffice for most things on the rest and if I need M$ Office intercompatibility use OnlyOffice (online).

2018 is introducing the "ribbon" layout.  I'm helping with the beta testing of the linux version.

Let me know what you think of the ribbon layout. My wife is still using Office 2007 but is looking to switch.

Re: Kingsoft Office For Default Installation

Q4OS will become more popular but Kingsoft isnt an option but certainly FreeOffice may be a good alternative for many.

I use LibreOffice and havent had any issues so far.

Re: Kingsoft Office For Default Installation

One thing I found today, is that OnlyOffice has an installable version.  EXTREMELY fast, and very good compatibility with MS formats (binary and XML), AND OpenDocumentFormat documents.  I'm going to using it as my go-to on my q4os install from here on out.

If anyone's interested, can be downloaded from

https://www.onlyoffice.com/download-desktop.aspx

Re: Kingsoft Office For Default Installation

I like the feel of freeoffice, but if someone needs interoperability with M$ files, not just the ability to read them, then FreeOffice isn't really a good solution, since it can't write the M$ XML file formats.

Re: Kingsoft Office For Default Installation

My wife uses FreeOffice in Windows and has done very well with it but yes there are problems. Onlyoffice might be a good alternative. For the problems shes been using WPS Kingsoft with success.

Re: Kingsoft Office For Default Installation

haha so funny hear that, you don't have windows, but sure, WPS working on LL (linuxLite), and windows too, but for me.. the first time using Q4OS ... i have failed installing it.

and i know why, cz i must downgrade Q4OS for working WPS.

Re: Kingsoft Office For Default Installation

I think it's not  alternative where, OnlyOffice just give you x64 architecture .... and yes, as i mention it before...

#1. If you want using WPS/ KingSoft Office .. please downgrade your Q4OS... don't use SCORPION. ( I don't doit )
#2. but, if you want new Q4OS features, using SCORPION is option, than install SoftMaker FreeOffice. ( I do )

remember it, we are get these software for free choose, one, three or all... cz we're FREEDOM using it. big_smile
