SD card adapter showing as USB device

My computer does not have an SD card reader so I use a USB adapter. I am running Scorpion, and it is showing in the task tray as a USB device (which I guess it is). In Orion this never showed up, so it gets confusing. Is this the new normal behaviour? Should the SD adapter show as a USB device along with the SD card that plugs in to it. So now I have two thumb drive icons!
In Orion I only had the SD card show as a USB device (thumb drive icon), the adapter never showed in the task tray.

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

I will have to check later, but I think it may show two devices if it has an iso written to it, or two partitions, or a partition and some free space. I have noticed quite often (not always) when I write an iso to either usb stick or SD card it displays two entries for that device, sometimes the device does contain two partitions and sometimes not.
You could test this by clearing an SD card (Gparted->Device->Create Partition Table) and then creating a single partition (fat32) when finished unplug and re-plug in the device and it should show just one device in the system tray, then write an iso (not all images produce the same results) and see if you now have two icons, I have tried using quite a few different iso images in the past and it only happens with some of them, although if it happens once it is usually reproducible.
And I think (going from memory) I had this effect with Orion as well as Scorpion, so don't think it is a change that has produced it.

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

I have done that with Gparted. The thing is, I can unmount the SD card, but the adapter is not mounted. After removing the SD card the adapter still shows in the tray as a thumb drive until I unplug it. Same SD adapter I was using with Orion and I don't recall ever seeing it before.

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

I just plugged in my sd card adaptor and it doesn't show in the system tray, but the little led lights up to say it is ready, when I put a card in only one usb icon appears... Maybe it's the adaptor causing the issue, if it has some flash memory on it the system might think it is another device?? but that's just guessing.

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

I would agree but the adapter I'm using is a cheap one. Actually I have two different types and both produce the same result. Plus they did not do this on Orion. Since you are not having the problem it may be something I have done, but I can't think of what! Not a big issue, just something that has changed.
This is like one of the adapters - https://ixquick-proxy.com/do/spg/show_p … 3042f4ffd6

Hope that link works! smile
I wasn't able to find the other, pretty old one with a short cable and it allows reading of SD, Micro-SD and MS (whatever MS is) cards. Both cheap foreign made adapters.

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

This is just the adapter plugged in, no SD card inserted.

This is my adaptor...

and this is what lsusb shows.

Bus 001 Device 008: ID 14cd:6700 Super Top Card Reader

Again I think this is a cheap import device, but it seems to work ok, I use it as I sometimes have issues with my built in sd card reader.

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

Its more than likely an issue with the adapter but Scorpion is using a newer kernel with better support and thus react differently than Orion in some instances.

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

I would guess the same, there are so many slightly different versions of these devices and usually available for next to nothing, I think I got mine from the local pound-shop, but no prizes for guessing how much I paid. big_smile

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

This must be one of those instances. lol
Like I said, it's not a big thing. Just have two thumb drive icons instead of one. And always have one while the adapter is plugged in. At least I don't have to wonder where I put it!
Thanks guys, as long as I know I haven't done anything wrong or my system isn't acting weird then everything is ok.
I think I paid $.99 for one of them and maybe $1.28 for the other? It's been a year or so ago and my memory isn't the greatest!

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

Yes mate, and I can remember when I lived in Spain we had 100 peseta shops and at the time that was about 40 uk pence! and they were amazing little places, you could get a lot of little bits that the big stores didn't bother selling (not enough profit for the big boys).

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

Here in the states we have swap shops which are  computer shops where you can buy, sell or trade computer stuff. The one in my area is amazing and still has a lot of older items.

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

That sounds pretty cool! I don't think I have ever seen one over here, but I'm sure there would be something similar somewhere... or maybe not, we live in a throwaway society now and last week I had to take a ton of rubble to the tip and couldn't believe some of the things people were simply throwing away! Petrol mowers, computers, furniture, and the amount of kids bikes was unbelievable!!!

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

Swap shops have been around since the late 80's early 90's and even though many have dissapeared, you can still find them, particularly in good tech areas.

Traded some goodies to get my first Commodore 64 in the day.

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

That was my very first machine (of my own) and I used to mess about with that for... well all the remaining hours between work and beer! I was only 16 but moved out of home and enjoyed the freedom (some say too much big_smile ) and from there on I've always had a computer and (like you I would guess) cannot even begin to calculate the hours/days I've lost to them smile

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

C64 was one of my favorites but I spent even more time doing game coding on Apple II, which was a popular platform for many legendary game makers.

I really miss those days as everything was new and unique and you were never bored.

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

Well heck. My first computer was a Radio Shack CoCo! And I upgraded the memory using the piggy-back method. Lots of people ask me why I got a game instead of a computer, but I did a lot of Basic programming on it and was able to do almost everything I wanted.

Re: SD card adapter showing as USB device

Youre talking about the TRS-80 which was a versatile machine.  Thats the way it was for many back then.
