RE: Installing Q4OS_i386

I am trying to install the i386 version of Q4OS(Orion) on a laptop. The computer is an Acer Travelmate 4500 (CPU is a Pentium-M@1.8GHz with RAM 1.0GB). Installation seems to have proceeded without a hitch.  Rebooting after installation, I chose Orion from GRUB menu (dual booting with Win-XP and Dragora Linux  [Dragora does not show up in GRUB menu]). The system says "Cleaning  ...blocks/files" and then, it just hangs. The mouse pointer turns into a spinning ball and stays put. The computer is solidly locked. I have to literally pull the plug to restart the computer.  After that forceful rebooting I am presented with "GRUB rescue" prompt. Not knowing much about Linux (CLI), I am stumped.

I have tried the i686 version (on another computer with PAE) and I would like to install the i386 version on my non-PAE computers. I would appreciate any help in  getting past "GRUB rescue"  :-)

Re: RE: Installing Q4OS_i386

Acer Travelmate 4500 has a few issues with acpi. Older bios and lack of bios updates can cause a variety of problems.  Thats probably whats causing the issue.

Possibly setting the boot parameters to noacpi or acpi=off may help.

Re: RE: Installing Q4OS_i386

I have set the bios boot to default, so that the system will boot from the HD. I have no idea as to where to set ACPI(?)" off.

In "Tips and Tutorials" Bobby posted(on 2016-01-1) a 'caution for new users - Grub 2' about locating the swap partition.

Now the HD (hda) has three partitions:

hda 1 ......WinXP

hda5 ......Q4OS_i386

hda 6.......Linux swap

Reinstalled Q40S with the option of "use the largest free space" which is about 24 GB. After the installation accepted the suggestion to reboot to the harddrive.

Grub booted the system and presented Orion as default and WinXP as a second choice (If chosen WinXP boots up fine). I chose the default. Grub menu disappeared and the following appeared on the screen:

"Loading Q4OS operating system.........
Loading initial Ramdisk..........
Loading, please wait.......
Q4OS_i386 : Clean, 48316/610800 files, ****/*** blocks "

At this point, the cursor appears as a spinning ball and keeps on spinning for ever.  I have gone through this process atleast half a dozen times (today) making various changes as suggested. But the end result is the same, "Clean xxxfiles, xxxxblocks" followed by a spinning cursor  :-(

I am reaching the end of my tether :-(

help....

Re: RE: Installing Q4OS_i386

I have added a post in Tips and Tutorials to show you how to add the boot time parameter to your grub entry.

Beat me to it Dai, thanks for posting that and hopefully it will work as ive had this problem with this system before. Unfortunately it may not be the only cause so lets see what happens.

Re: RE: Installing Q4OS_i386

I figured it might be better to have some answers like that put into Tips section to make easier referencing. smile

And yes, it might just be the first step to solving this issue but I'm sure we can get there.

Re: RE: Installing Q4OS_i386

Eventually Id love to see a compilation of fixes as a faq, but definitely a great idea to post it in the tips forum.

My other comment is, I see hes still using WinXP.  No way to make it secure at this point in time even with third party security apps.
