Larger Q4OS ISO images for computers with poor internet access

It would be nice if there was a variant of Q4OS installation media containing as much data as it is only possible, i.e. all Q4OS profiles, Q4OS apps, proprietary codecs, some propriety drivers (for instance, NVIDIA drivers), etc. I had to install Q4OS on a few computers in a rural area, and with a 1Mbps internet access it wasn't a pleasant experience... Such larger installation media would definitely help.

Of course, I'm not talking here about live CDs (they have to be as small as it is only possible).

There are options available, one is...

You could download the Debian DVD images and loop mount them and attach them as apt sources, this would mean you could install most software without any internet access, although updates would obviously need to be fetched from online repositories.

I would suggest a iso with the Full desktop profile applied, because I always apply that when I install Q4OS, yes it does take up space, but it does not decrease performance.

Full desktop profile is still downloaded so it wouldnt help him given he only has a 1Mbps internet connection.

He really needs a disk with the OS and apps on it for direct install.

There is also the option to create your own live-cd and configure which applications you want to have installed, an outline is posted here. It is not a full instruction set but will point you in the right direction, I have used this for creating my own custom Live-Cd for installing (and re-installing smile ).
I will be making a new one when Scorpion becomes stable and will find the time to post a more detailed tutorial for it as I think it is a great feature to have.

Re: Larger Q4OS ISO images for computers with poor internet access

Its a great idea Dai if he has a faster connection so he can create one for himself to use where internet connections simply arent fast enough. I feel sorry for those people with the 1Mbps connection as even after getting a full install off a disk, just maintaining that install is going to be painful.

Yes, but imagine how painful it would be trying to run Ms systems there big_smile . I guess most of us that have the luxury of fast connections take them for granted after a while, I can remember my first 14400 bps modem and thinking WOW! this is great! but now it would be an unworkable solution for even the most meagre of systems.

Using a MS OS would be a nightmare with 1Mbps, ouch!!  I still remember the old modem days.

Re: Larger Q4OS ISO images for computers with poor internet access

Guess there is limited time / resources to be maintaining different versions.

My request was going to be for a real light version that used a WM instead of a full DE [maybe Openbox or PekWM] plus light versions or cli versions of apps.

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Re: Larger Q4OS ISO images for computers with poor internet access

My thoughts would be that it would no longer be Q4OS, there are already distros like BunsenLabs which offer something similar (I used to love #! ) and to make Q4OS without the TDE environment would seem a little off-track to me, but just my own opinions and the devs may have other thoughts on it. smile

Feel the same way Dai as TDE is what makes Q4OS unique and its already pretty light.
